The Ionia Sentinel, Thursday, January 4, 1900

Orleans, Jan. 1—Maritta Hitchcock was born Dec. 8, 1824, in Columbia, Loraine 
county, O., and died Dec. 27, 1899.  She was married to Winslow Shaw, Dec. 8, 
1841, who died in June, 1890.  They moved to Berlin, Ionia county, in 1859 and 
from there to Mecosta county in 1883.  She was the mother of five children, 
all of whom are living.  Miss Julia Shaw, Belding; Frank Shaw, Amble, Mrs. 
Sarah Root, Ionia; Gleason Shaw, Belding, and Mrs. Amanda Sprague, East 
Jordan.  Besides these to mourn her loss are six grandchildren and four great 
grandchildren. She was converted in early youth and bore her trials and 
sufferings with Christian patience and unusual fortitude.  She was a member of 
the M.E. church and the funeral services were held at her late residence in 
Belding, Dec. 28, Rev. Klose officiating.  Friends from this vicinity 
sympathize with the bereaved family.
