Mrs. Shay was a native of Wales, having come to this country with her parents at the age of 11 years, locating near Belding. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Griffiths. She married Mr. Shay at Belding 46 years ago. The family resided in Chicago for a number of years and came to Orange township 24 years ago, where they lived until moving to this village a few months ago. The husband survives, as do five children—Mrs. Ida Newkirk, Grand Rapids; John, Allen and Miss Dorothy Shay, Portland, and Mrs. Thomas Gannon, of Chicago. There are 12 grandchildren. There are also two brothers, John Griffiths, of Belding, and Thomas Griffiths, of Louisville, Ky., and two sisters, Mrs. Walter Snyder, of Albion, and Mrs. Marie Rogers , of Minneapolis, Minn. Another daughter, Mrs. Arthur Summers, died several years ago, leaving the husband and seven small children. Mr. Summers and his children have since made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Shay.
