Resided In Portland Two Years Before Going To Jackson 14 Months Ago. Funeral Saturday. Charles Shean, 59, warden of the state prison of southern Michigan at Jackson since January 1, 1935, died Wednesday afternoon, three hours after suffering a stroke of apoplexy while attending a Rotary club luncheon at the Hotel Hayes in that city. He was stricken about 1:30 and immediately taken to a hospital where death came at 4:30. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon from the Episcopal church at Jackson with burial at Kalamazoo. Warden Shean had been in poor health recently, suffering from a toxic condition resulting from food poisoning incurred several weeks ago in Lansing. For two years, prior to his appointment as warden of the Jackson prison, Mr. Shean and his family resided in Portland, making their home in the old Will Stone residence near the schoolhouse on Brush street. While here the warden made many warm friends, a number of whom were notified of his death over the telephone by G. I. Francis and Chas. T. Lockwood, who left here and accepted positions at the prison at the time of his appointment as warden. Warden Shean was born in Richland, Mich., and when a youth went to Kalamazoo where, in 1904, he was elected sheriff of Kalamazoo county. He served two terms, from January 1, 1905, to January 1, 1909, then served Kalamazoo as police commissioner for several years. He was appointed deputy warden at Jackson prison in 1918 and served until 1922 when he was appointed warden of the Ionia reformatory. He was retired from that position in 1933 by Governor Comstock, and lived in Portland until called to take over the Jackson institution by Governor Fitzgerald in January, 1935. He is survived by his wife, Maude, and two sons, Charles, who remained in Portland when his parents moved to Jackson, and George, a clerk in his father’s office at the prison.
