Shears was swimming with the aid of an inflated tire tube and suddenly called for help. Before a young woman, said to have been a Grand Rapids nurse, could reach him in a row boat, he sank. The body was recovered immediately and taken to Belding, Shears' home by Bruce G. Fales, Belding undertaker. Mr. Shears was 27 years old. He was beloved by the members of the Ionia City band and had a host of friends and admirers here and in his home city and in Grand Rapids. He played several instruments, but specialized in the coronet, having studied for it under John O'Donald of Grand Rapids. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shears of Belding, and four sisters, Mrs. Grace Fitzner, Mrs. Florence Anderson and Miss Myrtle Shears, of Belding, and Mrs. Josephine Smith of Greenville. Funeral services were held at his parents' home Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Wl H. Ellis officiated. Burial was in Belding cemetery.
