She had been a patient there for a week, suffering from a heart ailment. Mrs. Sheets was born in Danby Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Martin. She was married to John Sheets and the couple resided in Portland for many years. Mrs. Sheets died three years ago last May. For many years Mrs. Sheets was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Co. here having been retired shortly before the dial system was installed. She was a night operator for many years. Surviving are three brothers – Chester Martin, of Wyoming; Clarence and Elmer Martin and Glenn Ames, of Portland. She had been an active member of the Danby Cemetery society for many years and had filled various offices in that organization. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 at Neller Funeral home, and burial will be in Danby cemetery. Rev. Park Newcombe of the Methodist church will officiate. The accompanying picture was taken at the time Mrs. Sheets was retired by the Michigan Bell Co., after 25 years service as a night operator in the local exchange. Her service with the company totaled 28 years as she started as a “day” relief operator in 1919 and three years later became the night operator. She continued in that capacity until January, 1948.
