Shepard Dies At Blanchard Resident of Lake Odessa Many Years Dies at Daughter’s Home. Burial at Lakeside. After a lingering illness of many months William H. Shepard died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Houghton at Blanchard. Mr. Shepard was a resident of Lake Odessa and vicinity for a good many years, and leaves many friends here. He was a brother of Dan Shepard, a business man here until a few years ago, and he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Joe Johnson who lives southwest of town and Mrs. Cora Anway of Grand Rapids. The funeral was held Monday at Blanchard with a service at Lake Side cemetery here where the burial took place, beside his wife who died two years ago. Obituary William H. Shepard, son of Almeda and Elijah Shepard, was born in Lafayette, Van Buren county, Mich., July 27, 1860 and departed this life August 14 at the home of his eldest daughter, Mrs. Grace Houghton in Blanchard, at the age of 71 years and 18 days. During the Civil was he lived with his mother and older sister in Ohio. At the close of the war his father returned and moved his family to Ionia county, Mich., where they settled on their farm four miles north of Lake Odessa. He was united in marriage to Alice A. Bywater, February 20, 1881. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Grace Houghton, Mrs. Clara Smith, both of Blanchard, Jennie A. deceased, Dr. Bert H. Shepard of Lowell, Mrs. Bertha Franklin of Remus and Mrs. Elsie Engerson of Detroit. In 1893 he purchased a farm in Mecosta county and moved his family there where they lived until 1906 when they returned to Lake Odessa where he has since resided. Mr. Shepard was a kind father, devoted friend, and generous neighbor, always willing to help others and respected by all who knew him. His wife preceded him in death about two years ago.
