Mr. Jas. P. Shepard was born in Wayne county N.Y., January 7, 1819, departed this life Sunday, January 30, 1898, aged 79 years and 23 days. A wife and 19 children survive him. Mr. Shepard was a man of great perseverance and aimed to accomplish whatever he undertook. He always aimed to be on the side of right and lived the convictions of an honest heart. He was the father of 23 children, four of whom have passed before. He started with his young wife, from New York in 1846, and settled in the wilderness near Lyons, Ionia county, Michigan, where he remained for twelve years. Thence he moved to North Shade, Gratiot county. He settled on a farm which he held in possession until 1880, when he moved into Montcalm county. The high esteem in which Mr. Shepard was held was shown by a large concourse of people at his funeral which took place at the Sethton church, Wednesday, February 3, Rev. Roy Weston officiating. After the services his remains were interred in the S. W. Newark cemetery.
