The Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 7, 1885
Found Dead – Wednesday afternoon the dead body of a man was found lying in the 
road, a little north of Potter’s corners in Keene, about four miles north from 
Saranac.  A coroner jury was impaneled by Justice Payne who went out and 
viewed the scene and brought the body to town.  It was recognized as being 
Louis W. Sheppard a half breed Indian who worked last summer for John Crane, 
of Berlin.  The cause of his death is unknown.  He was about 80 years old.
