Sentinel Standard – Friday, 5 April 1940
LaVern H. Sherd, 76, died at his home, 113 ˝ Webber court.  Friday morning, 
April 5, following a long period of failing health and eight weeks of 
illness.  He suffered a stroke Saturday what is believed to be his second 
stroke, March 30.

He was born in Lenawee County, September 28, 1863, and moved to Montcalm 
County while still a young boy.  He married Nettie Galloup at Sheridan, June 
9, 1896.  One daughter, Mrs. Alta Martin, and two sons, Watson and Lyle, 
preceded him in death.

Surviving are the widow, Nettie, one daughter, Mrs. Alta Martin, six 
grandchildren, Meredith and Marguerite Martin, Mrs. Harold DeGrout, Vivian, 
Doris and Bernice Martin and two great grandchildren, Roy William Martin and 
David DeGrout.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon, April 7 at 2:30 o’clock from the 
Stebbins funeral home.  Rev. George Woolcock will officiate and interment will 
be held in Palo cemetery in the family lot.  The body will repose at the home 
of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Martin, 537 North Jackson Street until one o’clock 
Sunday afternoon.
