Sherd will be received by the Stebbins Funeral Home in Sheridan from Chicago on Friday and burial will be from Palo Baptist Church under the direction of the veterans organizations of the area on Sunday afternoon May 22, 1949. Marshall Joseph Sherd, son of Mildred I. and Leslie M. Sherd, Sheridan was born at Grand Rapids on September 12, 1920. He graduated from Sheridan High school in 1939. He married Shirley Blanton of Carson City on April 10, 1942 and entered military service at Kalamazoo on August 10, 1942. He sailed for overseas duty in the European theatre of operations on February 20, 1944, as a member of Headquarters Ballery of the 407th AA Artillery Battalion. This Battalion, serving as infantry men landed at Omaha Beach, June 8, 1944 as a part of the invasion forces. They were actively engaged in the battles of the liberation of France and were members of the successful defending forces during the December and January Battle of the Bulge. Marshall was killed in action in Holland February 22, 1945 in the continuing battle for the liberation of Belgium. His service was recognized by the posthumous award of the military decoration second class with palm and the Croix de Guerre 1940 with palm by the government of Belgium and by the Purple Heart from our government. Surviving besides his parents and widow are three sisters, Mrs. Velma Townsend, Mrs. Dorothy Fields and Mrs. Betty Harriman; four brothers, Gerald, Duane, Ronald and Harland; two grandmothers, Mrs. Cora Sherd and Mrs. Mae Winne; aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as a host of friends and comrades. Two brothers, Robert and Harold, both veterans of World War II died in a plane crash October 28, 1947, and Marshall will be laid to rest beside them in the family lot at the Palo Cemetery. The church services will be under the direction of Rev. Lewis Herrick and the military services will be conducted by the Legion Posts from Carson City and Hubbardston and the VFW Post from Sheridan and Stanton.
