The daughter of Francis E. and Hazel E. Christian Holderman, she was born Aug. 2, 1937. For 26 years Darlene worked at the former Gibson Refrigerator Co., retiring in 1999. On Jan. 23, 1981, in Greenville, she married Harland “Sam” Sherd. Together they enjoyed traveling and taking cruises, camping at Sandy Pines Resort and wintering in Florida. A talented artist, Darlene especially enjoyed painting and ceramics and also was an avid reader. She had been a member of UAW Local 137 and First Baptist Church in Belding. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gerald Holderman; and special nephew, Chad M. Dakin. She is survived by her husband, Sam Sherd; four children, Deborah and Larry Lyons, Denise and Pat Dilley, Ed Clark, Ken and Shanna Clark, all of Greenville; four stepchildren, Cindy and Jerry Christensen of Stanton, Jodie Palthorpe, Julie and Bill Harding, Mark and Kendra Sherd of Fenwick; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ann Harden of Brutus, Bonnie and Jim Dakin of Greenville; brother, Edward Holderman of Greenville; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Holderman-VanDyke and her husband, Bruce, of Arizona, Betty and Dick Harriman of Fenwick; two brothers-in-law, Gerald Sherd of Memphis, Tenn., Ron and Mary Sherd of Sheridan; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday at Brown-Teman and Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin St., Greenville, with burial following in Rest Haven Memory Gardens. Pastor Ken Harger of Shiloh Community Church will officiate. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where envelopes for memorial contributions to Cancer Treatment Centers of America are available.
