Aug. 8, 1923 JAMES SHERMAN, WAR VETERAN, ANSWERS CALL Ionia Member of G.A.R. Died Last Night After Long Illness. James M. Sherman, one of the best known veterans of the Civil war, passed away at the family home, 427 East Lincoln avenue Tuesday evening, after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Sherman was born I 1841. Fort Sumpter was fired upon April 12, 1861. In less than a week after that first crack of the call to arms- on April 17, 1861, Mr. Sherman enlisted for one year of service in Rochester, N.Y. In 1862 he re-listed and served until that historic conference between Generals Grant and Lee at Appomatox, in 1865, made it both necessary and desirable for him to change his occupation. Following this Mr. Sherman took a rest of a few months, working on the railroad while he was resting, and on April 17, 1866, the anniversary day of his first enlistment, he was married to Miss Sophia Cook, of Marshall. Mr. Sherman came to Michigan in July, 1865. Mr. Sherman has been a resident of Ionia for the past 40 years. He was in the employee of the Pere Marquette railroad company for many years. He has been in failing health during the past few years. Mr. Sherman was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was an active member of the organization and held an office for many years. Mr. Sherman is survived by his widow, two children, A.E. Sherman of Battle Creek, and Mrs. John Malone, of Detroit, and three grandchildren, F. Sherman, Maurice and Maynard Malone, also a brother in Battle Creek. The funeral will be held from the residence Thursday afternoon at 3:30, city time. Rev. Charles J. Kruse will officiate. Burial will take place in the family lot at Highland Park Cemetery. FUNERAL FOR J.M. SHERMAN HELD THURSDAY Comrades of G.A.R. Conduct Services at Grave: Many from Away Here to Attend Funeral services for the late James M. Sherman, veteran of the Civil war, were attended from the family home, 427 East Lincoln avenue, Thursday afternoon at 3:30. Besides large host of relatives, friends, and neighbors who came to pay their last tribute, members of the William H. Borden post, G.A.R. and Women’s Relief Corps attended the services in a body. Representatives of the Brotherhood of Railway Firemen were also present. Rev. Charles J. Kruse, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated. The music was furnished by Mrs. Ray Colwell and Mrs. Myrtelle Peck. The G.A.R. were in charge of the service at the grave. The bearers were Robert Carpenter, representing the post, and Herman Humphrey, Roman Steinberg, Chris Ramlow, Melvin Kunkle and John Ikner of the railway firemen. Burial took place in the family lot at Highland Park cemetery. Those from out of the city were Mrs. John Malone, Maurice Malone, Mrs. Nellie Anders and son George, all of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Sherman and son Fredrick, Mr. Flemming, and Mr. Woodruff, all of Battle Creek; Mrs. Charles Heller of Flint, and Mrs. Lena Warren, of Muskegon.
