Mr. Sherman was born in Erie county, New York, in 1821 and came to Michigan in 1848 where he settled at Lyons, Ionia county, and followed his trade of blacksmith. Mr. Sherman helped to clear the ground for the first capitol of Michigan and was active in the life of the early pioneers. In 1848 he was married to Miss Sarah Hunt. They lived in Lyons about forty years, going to Charlevoix about ten years ago, where they have made their home with their sons. He leaves his wife and four sons, Henry of Charlevoix, Dennis and William of Muskegon and Charles of Bay Shore. A daughter died fifty-five years ago. Mr. Sherman had been a member of the Masonic order since 1866 (being a member of Lyons Lodge) and was a member of the Methodist church.
