Barbara J. Sherwood, age 77, of Berlin Township, passed away Thurs., Feb. 24, 
2005, in a nursing home in Lowell.

Barbara was born in Lansing, Sept. 1, 1927, to Harold and Mabel Lakin of 
Portland.  She married Wayne H. Sherwood, a Berlin township farmer, on Aug. 16, 
1951, and he survives.

She graduated from Portland High School in 1945 and received her Bachelor 
Degree in Food and Nutrition and Master’s Degree in Home Economics from 
Michigan State University.  She was a dietitian at the State Hospital in 
Howell, the Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and at the Ionia County State 
Hospital.  She was the Home Economics Teacher in the Saranac High School for 
many years.  Barbara was also an Ionia County Commissioner for two terms in the 
1980s, was much involved in the Ionia County Mental Health Department and the 
Ionia County Health Department.  She was a loving wife and mother at the family 
farm and was a member of the Berlin Center Methodist Church.  She will be 
greatly missed by the whole family.  Many neighborhood kids remember her 
cookies and apple pies she baked en masse, and by her grandchildren, who loved 
having her “play piano” on their bare backs with her finger tips!

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mabel Lakin; brother 
Douglas; and son-in-law Frank Blissett II.

Surviving are her husband; daughter Yolanda Blissett of Byron; sons Brian and 
Jean (Bucholtz) on Manitowaning, Ontario, Canada on Manitoulin Island, Bradford 
of Lewiston Maine; and Thomas (Johnette Bagley) of Milwaukee, Wis.; 11 
grandchildren, Frank Blissett III (and Lylene); Elizabeth (Blissett), Robert 
Ralston, Stephanie (Mike Thelen) and Jeremy Sherwood, Isaac, Noah, Abigail, 
Yosie and Yoel David Sherwood; three brothers, James Lakin (Janet) of Portland, 
Roger Lakin (Carol) of Belding and Kenneth Lakin (Janet) of Redmond, Oregon; 
and many nephews and nieces from near and far.

Visitation is at Lake Funeral Home, Ionia, on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 2 p.m. to 4 
p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Funeral services are at the Berlin Center 
church at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 28.  A graveside service will be held at the 
Saranac Cemetery.  A luncheon will be held at the Church after services.  
Memorial donations may be given to Alzheimer’s Research Organization.
