April 15, 1919 F SHERWOOD GONE Dug Wells in Portland and Vicinity Many Years. LEARNED BLACKSMITH TRADE OF SMITH & KENNEDY IN EARLY LIFE. Death Occurred Suddenly on Ted Wilson’s Farm Wednesday Morning. Frank Sherwood died at the farm home of Ted Wilson, near Pierce’s corners early Wednesday forenoon. His death was unexpected and the news was a great surprise to his acquaintances. Mr. Sherwood had gone to the Wilson farm Monday forenoon, where he had a job of ditching. He worked all of Monday afternoon ate a hearty supper and retired in good health. Early Tuesday morning he called Mr. Wilson, complaining of a pain in the stomach, and later in the morning Dr. Bradfield was called. Mr. Sherwood spent Tuesday in the house but the pain had been stopped and he seemed quite comfortable. Again on Wednesday morning he called Mr. Wilson at about 3:00 o’clock and spent the rest of the morning in a chair downstairs. It seemed difficult for him to breathe. Later on when Mrs. Wilson was passing through the room she spoke to him and there was no reply. His death occurred a little later, and was evidently due to a weak heart action. The remains were brought to the village in the Bandfield ambulance and later in the day taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Fishell. There are two other children, Mrs. Willis Gott and Burt Sherwood, both of Detroit. Mr. Sherwood’s parents died when he was very young. He came to Portland and was brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Matt Miller. When he was old enough to learn a trade he entered the employ of Mr. Smith and Duncan Kennedy, who conducted a blacksmith shop, working for them several years. He then went to Manistee, but returned to Portland after a few years and has lived here ever since. He was an expert well digger and did much of this kind of work. He was a good worker and though his occupation was a dangerous one he met with few accidents. While engaged on other work he lost part of his finger through the premature explosion of dynamite, but this did not put home down and out, nor did it seem to lessen his courage. Mr. Sherwood was born at Lyons. His father was an early stage driver. His mother was a sister to Lewis and John Olry, of Sebewa. After they died he lived with his aunt, Mrs. Wm. Estep, at Lyons until her death. It was then that he came to the Millers. He was born in Lyons 67 years ago. Forty-one years ago he married Miss Ida Wheaton, who died 11 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Gott and Burt Sherwood came from Detroit to attend the funeral, which was held Friday afternoon, at the house, Rev. Truman F. Galt, of the Congregational church, officiating. #C 256 Co. deaths File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/s/sherwood23708nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
