Shields, 67, of route two, died Wednesday at veterans hospital in Saginaw where he was a patient two days. A veteran of World War I, he was injured when the home troop ship Tuscania was torpedoed. He was born in Rapid City February 27, 1897, son of Neil and Alice Russell Shields, and was married February 6, 1919 to Ethel Hendrick. They had resided in Ionia 45 years. Mr. Shields was employed 20 years by Weber Electric company and worked for Consumers Power and Ionia Manufacturing company, retiring two years ago. Surviving are his wife, Ethel; three sons, Douglas, Donald and Ernest of Ionia; 16 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Stuart Graham of Charlotte, Mrs. Walter Cronkright of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Harold Fletcher of Traverse City and Mrs. Lottie Ostrander of Lake City. A daughter, Mrs. Irene Dumont, preceded him in death in 1941. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday at Myers funeral home with burial at Balcom cemetery.
