March 1, 2016 DOUGLAS F. SHIELDS Douglas F. Shields, 91, of Ionia, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 28, 2016 at Spectrum United Memorial hospital in Greenville. Doug was born in Jennings on May 12, 1924, the son of Ernest Neal and Ethel May (Hendrick) Shields. In earlier years, Doug proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II and later served as a correction officer with the State of Michigan, retiring in 1974. Doug enjoyed playing cards, tinkering and traveling especially the many camping trips tot he Upper Peninsula and DeTour Village. For many years he and his wife Janice enjoyed spending their winters in Weslaco, Texas. While wintering in Texas he enjoyed an occasional margarita and trips to Mexico. Doug was a talented mechanic who could fix anything and enjoyed working on old cars and tractors. Doug was married on June 22, 1959 in Evart to Janice E. Rudd. Doug is loved and survived by his wife Janice and their children, Jean (Don) Shields of Saranac, Douglas Shields Jr., June (Terry) Fry, all of Ionia, Mary Jan Shields of Muir, Judy(Dave) Handlon, Jerry (Vicki) Reinhardt, all of Ionia, Joy (Bruce) Feuerstein of Belding, and Cole Shields of Lyons; many grandchildren; great- grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded by his parents; his sister, Irene shields-Dumont; his brothers, twin Donald and Ernie. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be noon Friday, March 4, 2016 at Johnson- Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Pastor Paul Hulford of First Congegational Church, Belding officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour before the service. Military honors will be given by the joint honor guard of the Belding VFW and American legion. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary.
