Oct. 31, 2009 Robert J. Shore, 84, died Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 2009, at Bishop’s Glen Health Center, Holly Hill, Fla., while recuperating from surgery for a broken hip. Bob was born in Grand Rapids on Jan. 22, 1925 to Elwin and Lola (Switzer) Shore. He left high school in his senior year, enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a demolition man and combat infantry man in Co. I, 7th Infantry (3rd ID). He was wounded in France while clearing a minefield on Nov. 20, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart. After recuperation he studied journalism at Grand Rapids Junior College for a semester, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a radio technician in the 68th fighter Squadron, Japan until 1950. Bob met and married Hope (Downing) Crane in 1960. He worked at Brown Manufacturing in Ionia until his retirement in 1982, when they moved to Holly Hill. He had a lifelong interest in Photography and in veterans’ affairs and was a proud member of the Ionia VFW, Ionia Moose, “The Union” and Daytona DAV. He is survived by a stepson, Roland (Pat) Crane, Midland; a brother; Jim Shore, Holly Hill, Fla.; a brother, Lee Smith, Jenison; and a sister, Jean Hallam, Jenison; and four grandchildren, Angela (David) Bruder, Novi, Michael Crane, Greenville N.C., Jennifer (Nathan) Harms, Chapel Hill, N.C. He is predeceased by his wife Mona Hope and a grandson Jeffrey Crane. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Ionia. Services will take place in Ionia and are pending, contact the funeral home for more information. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home, Daytona Beach.
