Masonic Funeral Monday Apoplexy Ends Life of Octogenarian Who Came to Portland Almost Half Century Ago. Levi Shotwell, for almost half a century a resident of this township, died suddenly Friday afternoon at the age of 82 years. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy twenty-four hours earlier and sank rapidly. Mr. Shotwell had been enjoying unusually good health for one of his years and was at the creamery and other business places earlier in the week. The termination of his life came as a sudden shock to his family and friends. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, the services being in charge of Portland Lodge No. 31, F.&A.M., of which he had been a member for many years. Burial was in Portland cemetery. Mr. Shotwell was born in Elba, N.Y. in 1827 and 46 years ago came with his wife to Michigan and settled on the old farm two miles east of Collins. They lived there until 19 years ago, when they went to the home of their son, Freeman Shotwell. Mrs. Shotwell died there two years ago. Mr. Shotwell was for seven consecutive years supervisor of Portland Township and previous to holding that office was highway commissioner for thirteen years. He was the father of two children, both of whom live in this township. They are Freeman Shotwell and Mrs. Almer Welch.
