Portland Observer – Wednesday, 25 September 1889
It is a painful duty to us to be obliged to chronicle the death this week of 
Mrs. Freement Shotwell (nee Sophia Culver) who died at her home in this 
township yesterday morning at seven o’clock, aged about 24 years.  Mrs. 
Shotwell is well known to our readers, having lived in the village all her 
life, being a daughter of Charles Culver. She was a most estimable lady and 
had many friends.  Mrs. Shotwell leaves a babe about a week old.  The funeral 
services will be held at the Methodist tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 2 
o’clock.
