The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, January 12, 1929
Karl Shultes, 18-year-old youth, who in a delirium that followed an attack of 
flu and a siege of homesickness attempted suicide a few weeks ago by plunging 
into Grand river, died at the Ionia State hospital Friday night.  Shultes, a 
native of Germany, had only been in this community about two years.

Funeral services will be held from the home of his aunt, Mrs. Louis Macholl, 
Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.  
Besides his aunt, Karl left another aunt, Mrs. John Kalb, of Lyons, and a 
brother, Otto, of Chicago, in this country, and his mother, grandmother, 
brother, and sister in Germany.
