I. Simmons, who was among the oldest residents of this city, passed away Wednesday morning at 6:30 in the city hospital, where she had been a patient since Tuesday afternoon. She had been ill since Saturday with flu. Had she lived until the 22nd of next month, she would have been 81 years of age. She was born Lettie May McElroy, May 22, 1861, in Ada, Ohio, the daughter of George and Eliza McElroy. At the age of two she came with her parents to Michigan and the family settled on a farm south of Belding, later moving to this city. She received her elementary education in the schools here. Mrs. Simmons was employed for a time in the Richardson silk mill. In 1918 she and her husband started a business with a newsstand in what is now the Taylor coal office. Following Mr. Simmons death in 1927, she continued on with the business for a time. She was a member of the Church of Christ, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a former Maccabee member. Surviving are four sons, Ivan, Lynn and Lyle, all of whom reside in this city, and Roy of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter Mrs. Ethel Stone, of Greenville, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at Fales funeral home with Rev. F.W. Guenther of the Baptist church officiating, and burial will be in the old Belding cemetery.
