Sentinel-Std. - Wednesday, July 21, 1943

Mrs. Lilla May Simmons, 66, a former Ionia resident, died Tuesday evening in 
Sparrow hospital, Lansing, where she was taken over four weeks ago, suffering 
from a heart ailment. She was born April 4, 1877, in Belrock, Ont. In 1904 she 
was married to Frank Simmons at Verona, Ont., the couple making their home in 
Canada for some time.

Later they moved to New York state, where Mr. Simmons operated a flour mill. 
Eventually they moved to Michigan, locating first at Muir and shortly afterward 
coming to Ionia and established their home at 436 Jones street, where they 
resided for 26 years. Mr. Simmons died suddenly of a heart attack in 1934. for 
the past year Mrs. Simmons had resided in Lansing.

Surviving are four sons, Gordon, of Flint; Frank, of Lansing; Lieut. Woodrow, 
stationed at Camp Croft, S.C. and Technical Sergeant Frederick Simmons, 
stationed at Camp Haan, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles VandenHout, of Lansing; 
two sisters, Ms. Mary Hulburt, of Flint, and Mrs. Emma Carver, of Benridge, 
Minn., and a brother, Levi Powley, of Pontiac.

Mrs. Simmons attended the Ionia Methodist church and was a member of the Ladies' 
Aid Society.

Funeral arrangements are being held in abeyance pending word from the two sons 
in the armed forces. The remains have been brought to the Stone funeral home 
here.
