Simmons, 62, prominent farmer in Berlin township, dropped dead Saturday, as he entered his home for his noonday lunch. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Harold, at home, and Alden of Muskegon, one daughter Mrs. Seigel Bennett of Berlin, one brother Lyman of Orange. He held the office of Justice of the Peace and was township treasurer of Berlin township." IONIA SENTINEL STANDARD, MI, 6-30-1937: "Vernon L. Simmons, prominent Berlin township resident, died suddenly Saturday night rom a heart attack. Funeral services were held at his home 1 1/2 miles west of Benedict Schoolhouse, on David Highway. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stout and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith were in charge of flowers. Bearers were two sons, Alden and Harold, a son-in-law Seigel Bennett and two cousins, Fred Benedict and Albert Hinds. The Reverend from LeValley Methodist Church conducted the services. Relatives and friends attending from away were Alden Simmons of Muskegon, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Benedict of Big Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Weeks of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Simms of Lansing, Adelbert and Roy, Mrs. Amelia Simmons of Sheridan, Mr. and Mrs. Bert O. Fleming of Lansing, Elmer Benedict of Saranac, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taylor of Barryton."
