Terence E. Simon was buried in Muir cemetery on the eve of Memorial day. The second Ionia county resident to die in the Vietnam conflict, Pfc. Simon had seen war for only three months. He was stationed at Pleiku and was on field duty at the time of his death from shrapnel wounds, May 17. Burial followed 11 am services at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church in Ionia. He entered the army in October of 1966, received his basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. and combat training at Ft. Polk, La. Pvt. Simon was buried a scant 20 yards from the grave of Marine Cpl. Neil Potter, who was killed in Vietnam in 1965. Potter, 21 at the time of his death, was married and the father of two children. After the echoes of a firing squad and the gentle tones of taps and faded away, the American flag which covered the casket during the funeral was presented to his family. Terence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Simon, 289 Maple street, Muir. Survivors include his parents, eight brothers and five sisters, of whom Daryl, Rene, Brian, Kerstan, Kieran, Kevin, Valery, Gwen, Roxanne and Yvette, live at home. Dennis, married, is with the US Air Force in the Philippines and accompanied the body to Muir. Another brother, Keith, is also married and lives in Belding and a sister, Gail is a teacher in the Cadillac school system. Also surviving are his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George M. Miller of rural Lyons and his great grandmother, Mrs. Mary Spitzley of Portland. Following funeral services at SS. Peter and Paul church, the casket, draped with the American flag, was carried to the waiting funeral car by six non- commissioned officers from the Fifth Army, Michigan National Guard stationed at Lansing. Sgts. James l. Willard, James E. Steward, Edward D. Sanchez, Everett Ryder, Jr., Sherman R. Mossbarger and J. Hartigan were bearers and followed the honor guard from Portland VFW post 4090. The funeral procession made its way from the church, south on M66 to Riverside drive and east through Lyons and Muir. At the entrance to the cemetery the casket was removed from the car and proceeded by the honor guard, carried by the bearers, to the grave. Following the nine shot salute by the VFW firing squad and the sounding of taps, a salute was made to Cpl. Potter and flowers were placed on his grave. Major Brassur of the National guard presented the flag to Mrs. Simon. LEAVE CHURCH - The casket of Pfc. Terence Simon, draped with the American flag, was carried from SS. Peter and Paul church by six sergeants of Michigan National guard from Lansing. The funeral procession made its way from the church south on M66 to Riverside drive, then through Lyons and Muir to the cemetery. Flags in both villages were at half staff during the procession.
