She was born March 12, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Glenn and Josephine A. (Jackson) Welker. She was raised later by her foster parents, her aunt and uncle, Pastor Eugene and Goldie Spruling of Shelbyville, MO. She played trombone in the high school band. She was captain of the girls basketball team and graduated with honors (1939). She married John T. Simpson February 22, 1941 in Kansas City, MO and helped with U.S.O. shows by singing and yodeling. Traveled to 22 countries and 38 states while her husband was in the service. She was president of officers wives club while in Italy and Japan, helping with the orphaned children. Martha Jean worked as a hairdresser for two years, waitress for five years and in the laundry maintenance at Ingham Medical Facilities on Dobie Rd., Okemos for 20 years. She retired to childcare for 20 years. She moved to Lake Odessa in 1997 after a stroke. She will be greatly missed by many and her dog “Taco” and all who called her mom, Grandma Jean or friend. She was a member of Faith Bible Church. Preceding her was her parents and foster parents; husband, John T. of (48 yrs.); son-in-law Rodney Bordner; nephew, Allen Lee Bulter; sister, Ari Marie Welker, Muskogee, OK; brother, Bill Cadwell, Morningstar, Iowa; brother-in-law, Cleo Hill, Ellington, MO; and great granddaughter, Brooke Pennington, Walker. Survivors include step-dad, Samuel Miller, Kansas City, MO; daughters, Patricia Ann Bordner, Lake Odessa, Connie Jean Morgan, Logan, Utah; “adopted” Pamela (Mike) McCourt, Greenbush, Susie Mills (Jim) Fewless, Lansing; “adopted” sons, Carlos Castrol (formerly of Chili), Lansing, Wayne (Sherry) Fyan, Freeport; sister, Bette Lee (Jim) Bulter, Spring Hill, Kansas; sister-in-law, Hazel Hill, Elington, MO; brother-in-law, Ben Simpson, Coushatta, LA; grandchildren, Andy (Sandy) Morgan, Providence, Utah; Jeannie Lynn Morgan, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sgt. Mary Morgan serving in Iraq, Kurt (Meliane) McCourt, Bloomfield Hills, Michele (Phil) Seman, Lansing; foster grandchildren, Diane Hagadus, Lake Odessa, Patty (Matt) Anderson, Lake Odessa, Missy (Kendall) Goodemoot, Portland, Char Lukasiewicz, Grand Rapids, Jodie (Joe) Zimmer, Freeport, Virginia Fisher, Lansing, Petra Martinez, Grand Rapids, Denise (Terry) Stevens, Woodland, Brenda Harrell, Sandwich, IL, Stephanie Baldwin, Lake Odessa, Mike (Cathy) Raymond, Farwell; 106 others; 129 great grandchildren, two biological, Emma Jean Morgan and Samuel John Morgan, Utah; nine great-great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild. The viewing will be Wednesday, February 15 at Chapel in the Pines, 101 West Jolly Road, Lansing from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, February 16 at Faith Bible Church, 11 to 12 p.m. Funeral services will be 12 noon with Pastor Bruce Barker officiating.
