The Portland Observer, Wednesday, April 28, 1880
E. M. Simpson, formerly a cook at the Bailey House in Ionia, was found dead in 
bed at the Superior House, Muir, Thursday evening, April 15th.  He had been 
drinking pretty hard for two or three days previous, and on the evening in 
question retired early.  About two hours after he had retired an employee of 
the hotel entered his room and found him dead.  His body, though yet warm, was 
stiff and rigid.  The remains were taken to Ionia and the funeral held at the 
M. E. church Saturday.  He had a wife living in Ionia.
