Jan. 19, 1931 DEATH TAKES SIXTEEN-YEAR OLD IONIA GIRL Several Years of Suffering from an Incurable Heart Ailment Ends for Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Smith The death of Phyllis, beloved and loving daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Smith, occurred Sunday evening at the home of her parents on Rice street. Heart disease, which has stamped lines of ill health on her lovely countenance, causing her to give up every activity so dear to her and to remain so quiet and patient in the hope that she might again live a normal, happy life in the unfolding of her ambitions, caused her death Sunday evening about 4:15. During the weary years of her illness specialists had been called and nothing left undone to remedy the condition that was slowly weakening her resistance. But medical science and faithful care lost in the fight. Early in life she developed a love for the violin, and while a small child was making excellent strides towards mastering the instrument. She had attained the point in the art where she was able to play in the orchestra ensembles then, stricken with illness, she had to give up her beloved instrument and its bow and lay it aside with her school books, never to take them up again. During her illness there was never any of the bitterness developed that could afflict an ambitious child taken so seriously sick. She put aside her work and study and lay many long tedious weeks in bed, hoping to regain her health, patiently enduring her hours of suffering. At Christmas she was able to take a part in the Christmas pageant at the Presbyterian church, and came forth more like a lily, sacred and white, than like a child acting a part. Since Christmas she had failed and the last two weeks had been in bed, gradually growing weaker and always smiling her sweet, patient smile and knowing that the end was near. She was a member of Mrs. J.R. Bricker’s Sunday school class, and functions that were being held this week by this organization have been cancelled. She was born in Belding 16 years ago next month, and came to Ionia when a very small child. She leaves her parents and a brother, Vernon. The funeral services will be conducted from the home Wednesday at 401 Rich Street by Rev. R.E. Karban at 1:30 and from the First Presbyterian church at 2 o’clock. The interment will be made in the River Ridge cemetery, Belding.
