Mr. Skellenger had been in his usual health and had been working in a piece of ground and had come to the well near the house to get a drink. When about half way between the house and barn, he dropped. Altho a physician was called immediately upon his being found, it was too late, Mr. Skellenger having died within a minute or two after being discovered in his critical condition. Henry Skellenger was a pioneer resident of this community. He was a Civil war veteran and was well liked by all with whom he came in contact. He was born in Macomb county, this state, on September 4, 1848, and when a young man came to the Smyrna neighborhood, where he, together with his good wife and family resided until 1904, when they purchased the farm just outside the city and on which they have resided ever since. He was married on June 4, 1871, and celebrated his golden wedding anniversary last year. Mrs. Skellenger died after a short illness on March 4, of this year and the loss of his life partner was a great shock to him. Several weeks ago a petition was made to the probate court that a guardian be appointed over him and it is thought that this together with the loss of his wife, last March, was too much for him to stand and might be responsible, to a certain extent, for his sudden death. Mr. Skellenger was to appear in court and show cause why a guardian should not be appointed on August 9, and had engaged many witnesses and a prominent Ionia attorney to represent his side of the case. Surviving are three children: Andrew and Roston Skellenger of this city and Mrs. John Mehney of Smyrna. Another child, born to Mr. Skellenger and his good wife, died in childhood. A brother, Lemuel Skellenger, together with nieces and nephews and grandchildren and a host of friends are also left to mourn with the people of the community in the loss of a splendid neighbor and citizen. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at two o’clock, from his late home, Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating and burial will be made in the cemetery at Smyrna, by the side of his life partner, from whom he was separated by death but a few months ago, and with whom, it is our earnest wish, he has been united in the eternal home, the reward of those who lead the exemplary lives which the people of this community know were led by Henry and Mary Skellenger.
