Skoog Sr., at age 84, passed away due to natural causes on Aug. 30, 2014, at Butterworth Hospital. Jack was a loving husband to Dorothy. He was father to Richard (Deborah), William (June), Gregory (Elizabeth), Scott (Angela), Jack (Lori) and Cortland (Jennifer). He also was a proud grandfather of Heather, Stephanie (Kurt), Carl, Brett, Christine, Thomas, Cheryl, Sam, Sarah, Marie, Brandon, Ryan, Megan, Jack, Sophie, Foster, Ava and Sawyer; great- grandfather of Dalilah, Annabelle and Gracelyn. Jack was born on March 26, 1930, in Cadillac, Michigan, to Carl and Kathleen Skoog who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Karlene, and husband, Jerry Hoekwater; and his brother, Mike, and wife, Nancy Skoog. Preceding him in death was his late sister, Blenda, and husband, Jon Snellenberger. In 1961, he founded and was president of American Anodco, expanding into the Tier One automotive market with American Bumper & Manufacturing in 1979, and then adding American Rollform in 1986. His automotive company grew to employ over 1,800 people in Michigan and Indiana. He sold the business and retired in 1997. At that time, American Bumper & Manufacturing produced 87 percent of the Ford Motor Company front and rear end bumper systems globally. During his growth in business, he was very proud to lead a group instrumental in bringing the new high school and community college to Ionia. He graduated from Cadillac High School in Cadillac, Michigan, in 1948, later to be recognized in the Cadillac Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in track. He earned a scholarship to Central Michigan College (University) where he was an accomplished member of the track team, earning him an opportunity to run in the Olympic qualifiers. His pride as a CMU Alumni was most noted with his contributions and their recognition to open the Jack C. Skoog Track built on campus in 2001 to provide world-class training and support for CMU athletics. Jack will always be remembered for his firm handshake, often catching the unknown by surprise. Among friends and family he enjoyed a lifelong enthusiasm for the game of golf. Many will remember his competitive spirit and uncanny ability to make a putt on the last hole of a match. As the years passed, he often shared the phrase, "It's the little things." In life, he will be remembered for all of the little things done for others. His office door was always open to anyone needing help. He instilled passion in his boys with an entrepreneurial spirit. Jack took great pride in his family and their continued education by providing every opportunity to achieve success for each and every grandchild. Family will receive friends for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes be made in Jack's name to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choosing. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 at Mayflower Congregational Church, 2345 Robinson Road, SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49506. The family is being served by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service.
