Mr. and Mrs. Slade came to Michigan from Niagara county, N. Y., in 1880, and, with their family, settled on a farm about 5 miles from the village of Portland, where they have since lived. Both experienced religion and joined the M. E. church in the state of New York with some other families now living near the Slade homestead in Michigan. Mrs. Slade had been sick since last March, from which time she had been gradually failing. For some years circumstances kept her from enjoying many of the services of the sanctuary, but she never lost interest in the cause of Christ. Through her long illness she was sustained and greatly comforted by the Christian’s “blessed assurance” and when the time for her departure came, she closed her eyes to the scenes of mortality to open them in heaven. She leaves a husband and four children, now in the prime of life to mourn her departure; but “they mourn not as others who are without hope.” A devoted wife, a loving Christian mother, and a most excellent neighbor and friend has gone to her reward. “Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord.” Her funeral was largely attended at the house Sept. 18th. In the absence of the M. E. pastor at Conference, Rev. D. E. Millard, of Portland, conducted the services.
