Slater, 78, of Portland, passed away March 22, 2006. She was born on October 30, 1927 in Allegan, the daughter of Everett and Neva (Ochampaugh) Hathaway. Mrs. Slater was a member of the V.F.W. Post #5315 Ladies Auxiliary in Baldwin, she loved bowling, and enjoyed reciting poems to her children. Her greatest love was being around her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald J. Slater, sister Charlotte Owens and an infant brother, Max. Surviving are her children Linda (Asa) Bigelow of Portland, Debbie (Scott) Russell of Baldwin, Judy (Terry) Tahvonen of Portland, Cal (special friend, Jeanne) Slater of Jenison and Carl (Dorie) Slater of DeWitt; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother Everett (Roxanne) Hathaway of Mason; half sister, Velda (Mike) of Alaska. The Memorial Service will be conducted by Rev. Ed Filter, pastor at 1 p.m. Monday, March 27, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Portland. The family will receive friends from noon until service time at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family or Sparrow-Clinton Home Hospice.
