Oct. 16, 2008 Richard Slater, aged 87, of Clarksville, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008. Richard was born in Odessa Twp. On Dec. 6, 1920, the youngest of Berton and Rosa (Whiters) Slater’s children. He grew up working on farms in the area and was united in marriage to Genevieve Conklin on July 26, 1941. Like many others at the time, Richard was drafted to serve his country in World War II. He served as a medic with the 635th Medical Clearing Co. in Europe, including battles at Normandy and Ardennes. Following his discharge, Richard moved his family to Clarksville where he lived the rest of his life. He had retired from General Motors Diesel Equipment after 34 years. Richard had been a member of the Clarksville Fire Department for 50 years; he served on the Clarksville Village Council, and was instrumental in the creation and operation of Bear Creek Villa. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; Genevieve, his beloved wife of 65 years; his brothers and sisters, Roy, Carl, Forrest, Mable, Phoebe and Mary and to infant siblings. He is survived by his children, Sharon (Jim) Sherman of Clarksville, Cal (Marcia) Slater of Morrison Lake and Tom Slater of Saugatuck; grandchildren, Cindy VanderPloeg of Clarksville, Steve Sherman of Grand Rapids, Todd (Pam) Slater of Alto, Amy (Chad) Dennis of Grand Blanc and Brad Slater of Ann Arbor; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Emily and James VanderPloeg, Josh Sherman and Nathaniel Slater; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Esther Slater of Lake Odessa, and Ruth and Keith Nichols of St. Johns; and many loved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Fountain View of Lowell for the loving care extended to both Richard and Genevieve. You were so attentive to all their needs. We couldn’t have asked for better care for our parents. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa on Friday, Oct. 17, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Burial will be in Clarksville Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Clarksville Fire Department or to Faith Hospice of Holland Home.
