Slater, 77, formerly of 12323 Nash Highway, Clarksville, died Friday in Provincial House, Hastings. Born July 14, 1910, in Campbell Township, he was the son of Garfield and Cassie Rensch Slater. He attended Mill School and was graduated from Clarksville High School in 1928. He was employed by Pere Marquette Rail Road before entering the service in 1942. He served 37 months overseas with the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1945. After discharge, he farmed with his father in the Clarksville area. He was a member of VFW Post 4461, Lake Odessa. Surviving are two sisters, Esta Kole and Marion Howlett, both of Clarksville, and a sister in law, Olive Slater of Ionia; and nieces and nephews. A brother, Ivan Slater, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Koops Funeral Chapel, Clarksville, with the Rev. Larry Pike officiating. Burial will be in Clarksville Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial for VFW Post 4461, Lake Odessa, has been established, in care of the funeral home.
