Ionia Daily Sentinel Standard, 10 & 13 Mar 1958

Clarksville – Mrs. Berton Slater, 83, died at her home Saturday afternoon
following an illness of several years caused by a heart condition.  Mrs. Slater
was born Rosa Whitters in Campbell township, the youngest daughter of Stephen
and Sarah (Valentine) Whitters, on November 24, 1874.  While Mrs. Slater was a
small girl, her mother died and she was reared by Mrs. Phoebe Darby of Campbell
township.

She was united in marriage with Berton E. Slater August 19, 1894.  To the union
were born eight children, all now living.  They are Mrs. A.L. (Mable) McCaul of
Lake Odessa, Roy Slater of Saranac, Keith Slater and Mrs. Russell (Phoebe)
Geiger of Ionia, and Carl, Forest and Richard Slater and Mrs. Edwin (Mary)
McCaul of Clarksville.  Surviving besides her husband, who is ill at home, and
their eight children, are a brother, Samuel Whitters of Greenville, 23
grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Wesleyan Methodist church
in Clarksville.  The Rev. Raymond Carpenter will officiate.  The body will
repose at the John Beattie funeral home until time of service.

Funeral services for Mrs. Berton Slater, who died Saturday afternoon, was held
Tuesday afternoon at the Wesleyan Methodist church of Clarksville.  The Rev.
Raymond Carpenter officiated.  Bearers were all grandsons of Mrs. Slater.  They
were Von Geiger, Don Geiger, Ronald McCaul, Berton McCaul, Frank Myers, Gordon
McCaul and David Slater.
