Slater, 78, of Portland passed away Feb. 25, 2004. He was born Nov. 6, 1925 in alma the son of Fred and Ellen (Beam) Slater. Don was a veteran of World War II, and Korea, serving in the United States Navy, and was a lifetime member of the Peacock VFW Post #5315 in Baldwin. He was an electrician and a member of the IBEW Local 665 for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Evelyn Cantrell and Mary Buhs; brothers, Kenneth, Raymond and Fred Slater. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Shirley of Portland; children, Linda (Asa) Bigelow of Portland, Debbie (Scott), Russell of Baldwin, Judy (Terry) Tahvonen of Portland, Cal (special friend, Jeanne) Slater of Jenison and Carl (Dorie) Slater of DeWitt; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Donna Johnson and Connie Lamerson. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Ed. Filter, Pastor on Monday, March 1, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Portland. Military Honors will be provided by the Portland VFW Post #4090. Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Contributions may be made to the family of Don and Shirley Slater, or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
