He was born September 23, 1897 in Campbell township, the son of Berton and Rosa Whiters Slater. He was a member of F & AM Lodge, Clarksville and had been worshipful master. He had also served several years on the village council and volunteer fire department. He was deputy sheriff of Ionia county eight years, retiring in County Road Commission in 1962 after employed of 30 years. He lived all his life in the Clarksville area excepting five years at Ionia. He married Frances Jepson, April 4, 1930 and attended the Wesleyan Methodist church in Clarksville. Surviving are his wife, Frances; three sisters, Mrs. A. L. McCaul of Lake Odessa, Mrs. Phebe Geiger of Ionia and Mrs. Edwyn McCaul of Clarksville; four brothers, Keith and Roy of Ionia, Forrest of Lake Odessa and Richard of Clarksville. Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Wesleyan Methodist church with the Rev. Levi Slagle of Jonesville and Rev. Glenn Miller of Clarksville officiating. The body is at Pickens funeral chapel in Clarksville until time of the funeral.
