Slater, aged 91, of Lake Odessa, passed away early Friday morning, November 5, 2004. Forrest was born in Campbell Township on August 13, 1913 to Berton and Rosa (Whiter) Slater. He had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. For many years Forrest worked as a truck driver for the Ionia County Road Commission, and also worked as a carpenter; and as a maintenance person for Lakewood Public Schools. Along with all these jobs, Forrest also farmed. Forrest is survived by Esther, his wife of 72 years; children, Marian (Wayne) Duits, Norma Rose, David (Pat) Slater, Fred (Gretchen) Slater, and Darrell (Barbara) Slater; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; brother Richard Slater; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Phebe Geiger, Mary Peterson, and Mable McCaul; brothers, Roy, Carl and Keith Slater; son-in-law, Stuart Rose; and one great-granddaughter. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to Barry Community Hospice.
