Graduated from Flint Public Schools & attended Northwestern University in Illinois, where she was active in Northwestern's Gamma Phi Beta Chapter. Jean received her B.S.Degree in Geology from Michigan State University, where she met Arthur Slaughter. They both began their careers in Geology in Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Arthur & Jean were married o January 26, 1952 & resided in Lansing,MI where their son Bruce was born. Jean & Art moved to Escanaba, MI in 1954 where their son Steven & daughter Elaine were born. Jean & Art were active in creation & success of Bay de Noc Community College. Art preceded Jean in death in 1991 after 39 years of marriage. Also preceded in death by son,Bruce in 2001, Bruces wife Debbie in 2008 & Jean's brother Harry Hopkins in 2009. Jean moved to ionia in 2016 to be near her son Steve. Jean volunteered with health department education programs & mobile meals delivery for homebound seniors.Also sewed baby blankets for local hospitals. Jean had been very creative in sewing costumes for school activities & active in all school sports events for her children & grandchildren. Jean had accompanied Art on geologic field trips & meeting all over the United States. Surviving are her children Steven (Marilyn Witt)Slaughter & Elaine (Calvin) Herron; grandchildren Jenny(David) Urwin, Kern (Anina) Herron, Katy(Zachary)Gilliland, Kyle Slaughter, Arianee (Thomas) Goggins, & Mariah (Devin Cunningham) Slaughter; & great-grandchildren; Tate, Brody, Gage, Jonathan, Natalie, Addison, Eloise,Justin, Logan, Colin & Braden. Jean life was enriched by those she loved dearly including nieces & nephews, Mary, Martha,David, Carole, Mike, Barb, Tamera, Dena, Leslie, Rick, Debbie, Jill, Patti, Doug, & their families. The family wants to thank the staff & caregivers at Green Acres of Ionia & Interim Hospice & the warm friendships of those residents. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 11:00am at Green Acres of Ionia, 2550 Commerce Lane,Ionia,MI 48846.Luncheon to follow.
