Joy was an active supporter of the Greenville Public Schools' programs serving as OM coach and judge, a senior, mystery trip chairperson and committee member as well as a student mentor. She loved attending orchestra, band and choir concerts and took time to pursue art and photography classes for herself. Joy dedicated a large portion of her time and effort to supporting her three children, encouraging them to perpetually try new activities and challenge themselves in pursuit of their education and personal growth. Along with her husband Mike, she treasured taking care and bicycle trips throughout Michigan to see lighthouses and the fall colors. One of her greatest pleasures was her Thomas Lake home where she entertained friends, family, and herself with the simple beauty of the water, trees, and wildlife. Joy started her career working at General Tire in Ionia in 1979. She then spent three years working at Macalear Associates and an additional two at Langdon Inc., both insurance brokers in the Grand Rapids area. In 1985 she began working for the Greenville Public Schools' central office first as a curriculum secretary, then as a bookkeeper in the business office and finally as the district's general accountant when she resigned in July of 1999 due to her illness. Joy is survived by her husband Michael, grandmother Ethel Chapin, parents Laverne and Phyllis Adams; sons Dr. Matthew Christensen and his partner Dr. Shirley Lim and Marcus Christensen and his wife Audrey Christensen; daughter Jessica Mamais and her husband Anthony Mamais, and granddaughter Zoe' Mamais; brother Ricky Adams; and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation services will be held at the Johnson and Feuerstein Funeral Home in Belding on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In keeping with her wishes, there will be private family services at her home at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Joy Slingerland Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Johnson and Feuerstein Funeral Home, 203 Pleasant Street, Belding, MI 48809.
