Slocum, 73, who died Saturday afternoon, September 25. Mr. Slocum had been suffering for some time from a heart ailment, but spent the summer at his cottage at Spider lake, near Traverse City. There he was stricken with a severe heart attack, and was brought to his home here two weeks ago by ambulance, and had continued to grow weaker until his death. Mr. Slocum had been a resident of Ionia for 39 years, coming here as commercial manager of the Ionia-Portland-Saranac-Belding and Greenville area of the Bell Telephone company. He served the Ionia district until his retirement nine years ago. He had been associated with the Michigan Bell Telephone company for 42 years, starting as line construction foreman, and having supervision of the construction of long distance telephone lines from Bay City to Alpena, which gave Alpena its first out-of-town telephone communication on January 30, 1903. Since his retirement he has devoted much of his time to horticulture, especially the propagation of dahlias and gladioluses. He has gained national recognition through originating the “Burt Foraker” and “Son of Satan” dahlias, which still enjoy the coast-to-coast attention of dahlia hobbyists. He had devoted much time and travel as a dahlia judge, serving at many flower shows in the east and middle west. Mr. Slocum was born in New Haven in 1870. He had long been familiarly known to his friends as “Tiny.” Surviving him are his wife, Eadon; one daughter, Mrs. Alice Mulbarger, of Indianapolis, and one son, Orson (Bud), jr., of Roscommon, who is chief radio engineer for the Michigan conservation-state police radio system.
