W. Slocum, 75, widow of Ionia’s first Michigan Bell Telephone branch office manager, died suddenly Sunday evening when she collapsed in a service station north of Ionia. Mrs. Slocum, who lived at 8 Wagar Place, was driving her car when she became ill. Halting at a service station at Woods Corners, Mrs. Slocum complained to the attendant that she could not see through the windshield although the attendant said the glass was clear. Coroner Wallace H. Jackson of Ionia said Mrs. Slocum collapsed shortly after and died. He said she appeared to have suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Slocum, who had always been active, had lived on Wagar place for many years. Her telephone number had always been No. 1 on the Ionia exchange. She was born in England August 7, 1877, coming to this country when a child. She moved to Adrian where she married O. W. Slocum. He died in 1943. She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal church and the Ronald Willing Workers. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Francis Mulbarger, of Indianapolis, Ind., and three grandchildren. A son, Bud, died in 1947. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m.at the Stone-Kauffman funeral home. Interment will be in Highland Park cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to receive friends. Subsequent Publication: Thursday, February 5, 1953 Funeral services for Mrs. Eadon Slocum who died Sunday were held at the Stone- Kauffman funeral home Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Fr. Roger Bunday. Bearers were George Seidelman, Francis Gais, Chandler Haight, Sr., Chandler Haight, Jr., Kenneth McKee, and Voris Forshee. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery. Attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Francis Mulbarger and Mr. and Mrs. John Culley of Indianapolis, Ind., Miss Nancy Slocum of Battle Creek; Mrs. W. G. Gidley of Leamington, Ont.; Mrs. Harvey Tompson, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Tompson, Mrs. Dorothy Deer and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tompson of Adrian; Dr. Frank Tompson, Mr. and Mrs. Rene Mosgrove, and Mrs. Edith Nemitz of Detroit and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Gais and Mr. Gais of Belding.
