Mrs. Slowinski, a bride of but three moths, was returning early in the evening from her school when her Ford roadster was hit at an Odessa township road intersection, two miles from her home, by a Chrysler driven by Miss Leslie Clark, 42, also of Odessa. Struck broadside, the roadster was sent hurtling 40 feet, pinning the teacher beneath. Rescuers worked 20 minutes before they could extricate her from the wreckage. Mrs. Slowinski was then rushed to the Lake Odessa hospital where she died half an hour later of a broken neck. Mrs. Louis Vandecar, 55, of Odessa, a passenger with Miss Clark, was also taken to the Lake O’ hospital where she was reported in critical condition from a brain concussion. She was hurled out as the Clark machine somersaulted into a ditch. Miss Clark escaped with minor injuries. The accident happened at the intersection of old US-16 and the Lake Odessa road about 5:30 in the afternoon. Mrs. Slowinski, proceeding east, was hit by the Clark machine going south, according to the police. Elton Manley, a farmer working in a nearby field heard he crash and was the first to rush to the scene, but he told Special Deputy Ermal Garlinger and Deputy William Gardner, of Lake Odessa, who investigated the accident, that he did not see the actual collision. Manley was aided in extricating Mrs. Slowinski by Willliam McCartney, Lake Odessa banker, and a Mr. Heintzelman, who happened by shortly afterward. The victims were treated at the Lake Odessa hospital by Dr. Charles Peabody. He said that Mrs. Slowinski, who was unconscious from the time of the accident to her death, in addition to a broken neck, also suffered a fracture of the right shoulder, a broken jaw bone and a crushed collar bone. Examination of Mrs. Vandecar revealed that a three inch head cut inflicted the brain concussion. She also received possible spinal injuries and a broken rib. When the accident was reported later in the evening to Sheriff William Franch and Coroner B. J. Boynton, they arranged for a coroner’s jury which made a preliminary investigation. Those drawn for the jury were Dr. M. A. Hoffs, O. B. Garliner, Robert Vietch, Ford Curtis, Howard Poff and Averd Earl, all of Lake Odessa. Mrs. Slowinski’s body was removed to the Worley & Bain undertaking establishment. She was married last June to Roman Slowinski. Before her marriage she was Orpha Wortley. She had taught the past three years at the Baird school.
