Slowinski, 96, of Ionia, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital in Ionia. Loretta was born in Keene Township on Aug. 13, 1904, the daughter of John and Celia (Jacoby) Andres. She grew up in the German settlement of Miriam, south of Belding, the descendent of one of the early families that settled there in 1849. She attended rural schools and Belding High School. Following her family’s move to Ionia in the 1920s, she worked at the Ypsilanti Reed Company for several years as a bookkeeper. She also began her musical career playing the accordion with the Knapp Family Entertainers until her marriage in 1937. She taught piano and accordion lessons for many years until her retirement in 1970, and in recent years was a member of the Grand Valley Strings of Ionia. In 1951, she organized St. Catherine Rosary Circle of SS. Peter and Paul Parish, which remained active in making quality quilts for those in need. She was married to Roman Slowinski on May 24, 1937, and he preceded her in death on April 9, 1994. Loretta was a long time member of the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Mrs. Slowinski is survived by one daughter, Marilyn (Richard) Ransom of Ionia; three granddaughters, Susan Ransom, Cheryl Burdo, and Rachel Robertson; 1 great grandson, Braydon Robertson. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, Roman, by one son, Hugh; one brother, Ernest Andres, and one sister, Hilda Andres. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia, with Fr. Melvin Fox, presiding. Organist will be Mary Cusack. Committal services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Rich St. Chapel of Cook Funeral Home, Ionia, with a prayer vigil held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Educational Trust Fund or the Ionia Right To Life. Envelopes are available at the church or the funeral home.
