The family moved to Lyons in 1924. She graduated from Lyons High School, Evart County Normal and Western Michigan University. She taught for 15 years in the rural schools of Ionia County and 20 years in the Saranac Community Schools retiring in 1978. Mrs. Smalley attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and was a member of Lyons Baptist Church since 1928. Maxine is survived by two brothers, Judson of Ionia and Kenneth of Troy, MI; sister, Shelly Sherman; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Also her daughters Sandra Smalley and Carolyn Kerr, seven grand children, ten great grand children; one great great grandchild and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Llewellyn D. Smalley Jr. and her brother Charles. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Mrs. Smalley will rest in the Saranac Cemetery until Jesus comes. The family will receive friends and relatives Sunday 2-4 and 7-8:30 PM at the funeral home. Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution in Maxine’s name to Shiloh Community Church.
