Smejkal, 77, North Plains Township, passed away suddenly Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Ionia, the son of Frank and Frances Ivan Smejkal. He attended SS. Peter and Paul School. He served in the United States Army in World War II. He was a truck driver for Indian Summer Co. in Belding. He was a member of the Sheridan VFW Post 5065 of Sheridan, the DAV Post of Ionia and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Hubbardston. He married Zava Nemetz in Ionia on July 3, 1943. She survives along with three sons, Glenn of Marathon, Fla., James of Greenville, Ronald of Fenwick; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Francis Headworth of Orleans, Melody and Donald Teunif of Saranac, Robin and David Miller of Sheridan, Kelly and Mark Doolan of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Charles Smejkal of Ionia, John Smejkal of Belding; one sister, Mary White of Muir; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Hubbardston. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery, Ionia. Visitation will be all day today with a Scripture prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Hull Memorial Chapel, Muir.
