Mrs. Joyce G. Smiley, 43, of 300 Orchard street, Portland, wife of Howard
Smiley, former manager of the A&P store and formerly a resident of Ionia, died
Thursday evening at her home following a lengthy illness.

Born February 8, 1914 in Ionia, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Piper
who make their home at 624 Bayard street, Ionia.  She was graduated from Ionia
high school in 1932 and lived in Ionia until her marriage November 26, 1937. 
Mr. and Mrs. Smiley observed third 20th wedding anniversary last Tuesday.

Following their marriage they moved to Lowell and from there came to Ionia later
moving to Portland.  Mr. Smiley was manager of the A&P stores in each of these
communities.

Surviving are her husband, Howard; a son, Gary, 15, and her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Vern Piper.

Mrs. Smiley was a member of the First Christian church of Ionia when in Ionia. 
In Portland she attended the Congregational church and was a member of the
Portland Chapter of Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Neller funeral home in Portland Sunday
at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Herbert Kinsey of the Congregational church
officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery, Ionia.  Bearers will be
cousins, DeForest Piper, Gerard Perry, Edward Bensinger, Glenn Bensinger,
William Bensinger and William Rankin.
