Ionia Standard, 1 Nov 1895

Melissa, wife of Charles Smith, of Portland, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John 
Briggs, of Sunfield, died October 18, of consumption.  The funeral services 
were held on Sunday, at 10 a.m., at residence, conducted by Rev. M. Millard; 
interment in Portland cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born April 20, 1861, in Hancock county, Ohio.  In 1866 her 
parents moved to Ionia county, where she has since resided.  In August, 1885, 
she was married to Charles Smith.  The result of this union was four children; 
one daughter died at the age of seven years, and another when two months old.  
She leaves a husband, two sons, father, mother, six sisters and three brothers, 
to mourn her loss.

She was a member of the M.E. church at Portland, and will be greatly missed in 
the work and in the social gatherings of the society.
