L. 1910 DOD: April, 1910 Ionia Daily Sentinel – Saturday, 23 April 1910 The remains of M. L. Smith will arrive in Ionia tonight at 7:57 over the Grand Trunk and the funeral will take place from the residence of his sister, Mrs. O. S. Wood, East Washington street. Mr. Smith who has been a resident of Ionia since he (unreadable) at the time of his death. He was born in 1844 and his parents came to Ionia when he was very young. During his life in Ionia he has been prominently connected with several of the leading business enterprises of the city. He had charge of the Bailey house for several years and also ran the Clarenden Hotel, which was the old Sherman house on the corner of Main and Second streets. He was in business with K. R. Smith in the book store. He was postmaster for one term. Mr. Smith brought fame to Ionia as the owner of Montgomery, a race horse that in his day, was one of the best and for which the owner refused an offer of $10,000 made by S. A. Brown of Kalamazoo. Mr. Smith refused the offer and shortly after Montgomery died. He was first married to Miss Ada Foote, who was the mother of his two living children, Mrs. W. D. Castro, of Chicago, and B. N. Smith, of North Lake, Wisconsin. His second wife was Miss Ella Starkey, whose child died in infancy. Mrs. Smith’s third marriage was to Mrs. Judith Watrous of Ionia. During his early married life in Ionia, Mr. Smith lived on Lafayette street in the house now known as Walnut Grove cottage and occupied by Palmer Taylor. Later he resided in the Mrs. Sunderlin house on the same street. During the last days of his life in Ionia, he was engaged in the produce business with his warehouse near the Grand Trunk depot. Mr. Smith leaves two children, Mrs. Castro and Bert Smith, one brother, K. R. Smith and two sisters, Mrs. O. S. Wood, of Ionia, and Mrs. Herman Lowe, of Washington, D. C. Monday, 25 April 1910: The funeral for M. L. Smith was held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock from the residence of his sister, Mrs. O. S. Wood, East Washington Street, Rev. E. G. Lewis of the Methodist church conducting the services. The bearers were Chas. R. Smith, W. J. Smith, K. R. Smith, Jr., and Grove Wright. The music was very fine and was by Dr. Wing Gates and G. Lee Yates. Those from out of the city who attended were Mrs. L. D. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Castro of Chicago. Bert M. Smith of North Lake, Wisconsin, Wm. A.
