DELLA GALE SMITH Passed Away Monday At Home Of Her Daughter, Mrs. Veryl Tyler ILLNESS COVERED FOUR YEARS PERIOD Was Prominent In Club and Lodge Life and Active in Civic Affairs Amid a wealth of flowers the casket of Mrs. Della Gale Smith, beloved resident of this community, rested at the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon while services were being conducted by Rev. J. H. Steward, assisted by Rev. E. A. Waldeck. The large auditorium of the church was filled to capacity with sorrowing friends and relatives, members of the Order of Eastern Star, Ladies Literary Club and Woman’s Relief Corp attending in bodies. Following the services the casket was committed to Portland cemetery beside that of her husband, the late Leonard L. Smith, with services at the grave conducted by the Order of Eastern Star, and four members of the Masonic order, Fred England, Will Toan, Ben Briggs and Karl H. Miller, acting as bearers. Mrs. Smith passed away Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Veryl Tyler, where she had been confined to her bed the past four years following a stroke of apoplexy. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gale and was born on a farm northeast of this village 72 years ago, spending her entire lifetime in this vicinity. On December 23, 1879, she was united in marriage to Leonard L. Smith, the couple taking up their residence on a farm near Portland. Residing on the farm for 20 years they then moved to this village and occupied the house on the corner of Bridge and Maple streets, until Mr. Smith passed away in August, 1926, Mrs. Smith continuing to make her home there until she suffered the stroke four years ago. Until confined to her bed by illness, Mrs. Smith was an intensive civic worker, taking an active and prominent part in affairs pertaining to the advancement of Portland’s welfare. She was a member of the Baptist Church, Ladies Literary Club, order of Eastern Star, Woman’s Relief Corp, Portland Grange and Lady Maccabees. She was instrumental in organizing the Portland chapter, O. E. S., and was the first matron of that order. She was also the third president of the Ionia county association of O. E. S. and a member of the Jurisprudence committee of the Grand chapter in 1911. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Veryl Tyler, at whose home her death occurred; Mrs. John Webster and Mrs. Richard Hathaway, of San Diego, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Hattie Newman, of Lansing; also four grandchildren and one great grandchild. The grandchildren are Mrs. Bryant Chandler, of Lansdowne, Pa.; Richard Hathaway, Jr., of San Diego, Calif., and Mignonne and Dean Tyler, of Portland. The great grandchild is Derua Gale, the daughter of Lieut. and Mrs. Chandler, of Lansdowne, Pa. The flower committee was composed of Mrs. Raymond Jenkins, Mrs. Peter Trierweiler, Mrs. Sam Mathews and Mrs. Harry Segar. Mrs. E. A. Waldeck sang several selections. At the Tyler home Wednesday dinner was served by the Orange Thimble club and supper by the Portland Grange chorus. Among those from out of town to attend the funeral were Mrs. Lela Clark and Mrs. Purdy, of Belding; Mrs. Reasoner and Mrs. Steadman, of Palo; Mrs. Fleming, of Pewamo and Mrs. Murphy of Lyons, all past presidents of the county association of O. E. S.; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Coryell, Mrs. Irene Gellett, Mrs. Dale Blackman of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Dow Austen, Mrs. Cynthia Smith, Mrs. Karl Kichele, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Loren Dixon, George Burhans, Mrs. Frank Andrews, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Covey, Mr. and Mrs. Karl H Miller, of Grand Ledge and Fred Wilson of Ionia.
